Scout Camp – August 2023
We met bright and early on Saturday morning. 20 Scouts, three young leaders and four intrepid leaders. After a lengthy drive down we arrived at Callisham Cross campsite which was to be our home for the next week. Having not been able to visit prior to arrival it was a bit of a risk but luckly the site was lovely with an amazing view across Dartmoor. The first evening was the Scouts first opportunity to demonstrate their cooking and organisation skills. Lets just say they were much better by the end of the week! Day two took us on a trek up to Sheep Tor where James set up some climbing. It was well received until it started raining. Sadly it did not stop for 24 hours and it tested the canvas. The next day we went into Plymouth and had a good look round and an opportunity to do some shopping (mostly sweets for the Scouts). Day three was a busy day that required a early departure from the site. We first headed to Paington Zoo in the morning and then the waterpark at Quaywest. A lot of fun was had and at no point did we get told off by the staff! The Wednesday saw us set a challenge to the Scouts where they had to undertake a hike across Dartmoor. Most of the groups did very well and got to the meeting point without incident. The final group took an alternative approach but they all got back safe and well just a bit later than the rest. On Thursday we went to Woodlands Theme Park. All day was spent at the park and after the large scale soft play and drop slides were thoroughly tested out we went for fish and chips on route to the British Fireworks Championship which were launched into Plymouth Harbour and we had an amazing view from our point high on the cliffs above Plymouth. We headed home to bed very late and by now some of the kit was finally drying out. The final day saw us break site. However we manged to fit in some epic slip and slide action down the hill in the field and a competitive competition of giant snakes and ladders. As a final treat all 27 of us hit the local Toby Carvery for a feed up. Considering how much some of them ate you wouldn’t think we fed them all week. The final day saw us leave site early and undertake the arduous drive, getting back within a few minute of our estimated arrival time. The Scouts all worked really hard and did a great job. If the amount of laughter and silliness was anything to go by they had a great time.
