Lion Cub Scouts Brave Elements for Silver Award Challenge at Stanford Campsite

Date: 12th Jun 2025 Author: Mark Eastman
Seven determined Cub Scouts from Lion Cub Scout pack embarked on a challenging weekend camp at Stanford over June 7th and 8th, taking significant strides towards completing their coveted Silver Award.
The camp was specifically designed to help the Cub Scouts tackle various components of their challenge badges, fostering independence and essential outdoor skills. Upon arrival, the young adventurers were tasked with erecting their own tents, preparing and cooking their meals over an open fire, and diligently maintaining the campsite.
Despite challenging weather conditions, including a significant downpour, the Cub Scouts impressively managed to cook a delicious chicken casserole for their evening meal on the BBQ. Their ingenuity was further demonstrated by the construction of an “excellent” shelter, which offered welcome protection from the elements.
While a traditional campfire wasn’t possible due to the weather, the evening was still filled with excitement. The Cub Scouts enjoyed an evening hike, followed by lively wide games and word games, ensuring spirits remained high.
Sunday morning dawned bright and sunny, offering a welcome change. Although a couple of Cub Scouts initially resorted to cooking breakfast on a gas ring, their persistence paid off. Within an hour, a fire was successfully ignited, allowing them to cook bacon and sausage on the BBQ. The Cub Scouts gained valuable hands-on experience in fire-starting and received crucial instruction on the scout-safe use of axes and saws.
The weekend concluded with a concerted effort to clear the site. The Cub Scouts meticulously took down their tents, packed away all equipment, and ensured the campsite was left spotless.
“They all worked very hard but all learnt something and enjoyed themselves”. The Stanford camp proved to be a valuable and memorable experience, equipping the Cub Scouts with new skills and confidence as they continue their journey towards achieving their Silver Award.
