Drake Explorer Unit

Explorers are the fourth section of the Scouting movement. Right from the time of Baden-Powell, there have been arrangements for young people who wanted to continue after their time in the Scout Section, and in 1967, Venture Scouts were formed from the existing Senior Scout and Rover Scout Sections.

During the late 1990s we decided that, to meet the changing needs of young people, there should be two sections for the over-14s: Explorer Scouts for 14 to 18-year-olds, and the Scout Network for 18 to 25s.

Drake Explorer Unit is part of Crawley District’s provision for young men and women from 14 years old to 18 years old which works in partnership with our Group. Their main expeditions are often abroad. Over the past few years the unit has travelled to Holland, Czech Republic, Scotland, Finland, Croatia, Denmark, Sweden, lake District and Slovakia. They have canoed on the Thames, Ouse, the Wye, the Lake District and in Sweden, been caving, walking and climbing in Wales. Explorer Scouts work towards the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme as well as towards their Queen’s Scout. These awards occupy their time in Explorer Scouts and continue when they join the District Scout Network which works closely with our Scout Active Support Unit.
